In a devastating incident that occurred at 4:00 a.m., a fire engulfed a dormitory at Kasaana Junior School, located in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City, leading to a tragic loss of four lives. Additionally, eleven pupils were left injured in the aftermath of the fire.

The victims of this unfortunate event have been identified as Hillary Walugembe and Arnold Tumwesige, both of whom succumbed to the injuries they sustained during the fire. According to Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson Jamada Wandera, the two pupils passed away at Kirubu Hospital in Kampala, where they had been urgently referred for medical care.

The school authorities have revealed that the dormitory in question housed a total of 15 children, all belonging to the Top and Primary One class. Among those injured, Shahib Mwanje, Ssendagire Jordan, Poel Ssenoga, Grant Matovu, Muganga Martin, Alpha Wasswa, Austine Kisomose, and Elijah Ssemambo are pupils from the pre-primary section of the school.

Preliminary findings by the police indicate that the likely cause of the fire was an electrical short circuit. At the time of reporting, the school had been closed to the public, including concerned parents who had rushed to the scene with the intention of collecting their children.
