Kaabong District witnessed a tragic incident on January 12, around 9:00 pm, when suspected Karamojong warriors hacked to death Mr. Morris Ochen, a police officer attached to the Kotido ASTU zone. The incident occurred in Kurao village, Kalapata Sub County, raising concerns about rising insecurity in the region.

Mr. Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the brutal attack, stating that the assailants, yet to be identified, ambushed and killed Officer Morris Ochen, who was moving alone at the time of the incident. The attackers seized an SMG gun (No. UG POL 56-6503651-56725) along with ninety (90) rounds of ammunition.

“Our security team from Kaabong visited the scene with a canine dog, and they are yet to come up with additional information,” Longole reported. The police have initiated operations to track down the assailants and recover the stolen firearm.

Mr. Meri Jino, the LCV Chairperson of Kaabong, expressed concern about the escalating insecurity in the region, particularly the surge in murders committed by unknown armed warriors. Jino emphasized the collaboration between local leadership and security forces to apprehend the suspects.

“These are criminals; I think people who ran away from the disarmament [exercise],” remarked Mr. Jino. The statement alludes to individuals who may have avoided disarmament efforts and remained armed, contributing to the current security challenges.

This incident follows a previous attack on January 6, where a group of unidentified armed warriors raided Komuria West Trading Center, resulting in the death of one person and theft of money from a local bar.
