Kanungu Police Investigate Suspected Murder of 54-Year-Old Man

KANUNGU, Uganda – Police in Kanungu District are investigating the suspected murder of a 54-year-old man found dead along a footpath in Nyakagyezi Cell, Eastern Ward, Butogota Town Council.

According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate, the deceased, identified as Eric Ndamiye, was last seen on the evening of Saturday, October 26, 2025, drinking at a local bar owned by Niwanmanya Gift in Nyakagyezi Trading Centre. Ndamiye, described by residents as a known drunkard, did not return home that night.

Eyewitnesses reported that his lifeless body was discovered the following morning, Sunday, October 27, by locals heading to their gardens. He was found lying a few meters from the bar, with visible finger marks around his neck, suggesting he may have been strangled.

Police were notified by Eridad Byaruhanga, and officers, led by the Scene of Crime team, visited and documented the area. Investigations were, however, hampered after it was discovered that the scene had been tampered with before the arrival of the sniffer dog.

A postmortem examination conducted by medical personnel from Mpungu Health Centre IV confirmed signs of violence. The body was later handed over to relatives for burial.

ASP Maate confirmed the incident, noting that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible.

“Inquiries are underway, and efforts to bring the suspects to book are being made so that they can be charged accordingly,” he said.
