Kapchorwa Woman Arrested for Husband’s Death in Money Dispute

In Kapchorwa, a 43-year-old woman, Juliet Chelangat, has been apprehended by the police for the alleged murder of her 40-year-old husband, Steven Namawangala. The incident occurred due to a dispute over savings amounting to shs200,000.

According to Fred Enanga, a police spokesperson, the tragic event unfolded after a domestic altercation at the couple’s residence. Namawangala was accused of taking Chelangat’s cash savings, which she had obtained from a local village savings group to cover their children’s school fees. He failed to return the sum he had borrowed.




Enanga stated that Namawangala had initially confessed to taking the money and spending it over the course of two days but had intentions of reimbursing it. However, as he failed to fulfill this commitment, a severe argument erupted between the couple, culminating in a physical confrontation. Chelangat reportedly overpowered her husband, causing him to lose consciousness and eventually pass away en route to the hospital.




Juliet Chelangat is currently in police custody and has been charged with her husband’s murder.




According to the annual police crime report for the previous year, there were 17,698 reported cases of domestic violence in 2022, a slight rise from the 17,533 cases reported in 2021, representing a 0.94% increase in such cases.
