Airtel and Huawei Donate 200 Smartphones for Digital Progress in Kanungu

Airtel Uganda and Huawei have collaborated to expand internet access for teachers, health workers, social workers, and local leaders in Kanungu District. This joint effort involves providing 200 smartphones to these essential community members, with the goal of enhancing their ability to serve and impact their communities.

The event, which took place in Kanungu, featured a keynote speech by Dennis Kakonge, the legal and regulatory director of Airtel Uganda. He emphasized the transformative potential of the internet when used for productive purposes.

“In today’s fast-paced world, having access to information and effective communication is crucial for personal and community development. Airtel Uganda recognizes the power of smartphones to bring about positive change, which is why we are proud to offer affordable services,” Kakonge stated.

The smartphones distributed to teachers, health workers, social workers, and local leaders come with a monthly 5 GB data plan from Airtel, lasting for three months. This data allocation is intended to leverage the life-changing benefits of affordable and seamless connectivity, allowing educators to access resources, healthcare providers to offer better services, and local leaders to coordinate community projects more efficiently.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, who has played a pivotal role in shaping policies that make connectivity more accessible and affordable. This reflects Uganda’s commitment to digital inclusivity and innovation.

Airtel Uganda expressed its gratitude to Huawei for their unwavering support in making this initiative a reality. Kakonge encouraged the beneficiaries to use these devices responsibly and drive positive change in their lives and communities.

This event represents a significant step in Airtel Uganda’s mission to connect communities, enhance learning, and improve the delivery of social services.

The Minister for ICT thanked the partners for this initiative and urged them to expand their efforts to other hard-to-reach areas across the country.

“A smartphone is a tool for change. The government will continue to explore partnerships to accelerate connectivity for everyone. We are also considering ways to reduce tax rates on devices as outlined in the National Development Plan III,” Dr. Baryomunsi remarked.
