The Kisoro Central Police Station has arrested Hakorimari Gerald, 40, for the theft of 100 kilograms of sorghum and matoke.
Hakorimari Gerald is a resident of Gase village, Mbuga parish, Nyakinama Subcounty, Kisoro district. In 2019, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison and was released from Mbarara Government Prison on January 5, 2025. After his release, he stayed with Uwineza, a Rwandan national who is a commercial sex worker, in Kisoro Hill, Kisoro Municipality.
The arrest followed a tip-off from concerned residents. It is alleged that Gerald, a known thief, has been stealing various items and supplying them to Uwineza.
Following the arrest, residents, led by Kisoro Hill LCI Chairperson Sam Munezero, paraded the thief to Gatimba Police Post before he was taken to Kisoro Central Police Station. A bag of soaked sorghum (approximately 100kg), opium, a panga, matoke, and a matchbox were recovered from him.
Munezero condemned the act of theft and warned criminals using Kisoro Hill village as a hiding place.
The complainant, Habimana Ronald, a resident of Kamonyi Village, Kamonyi Ward, Northern Division, Kisoro Municipality, reported that he had soaked three bags of sorghum in water. However, the following day, it was discovered that the sorghum had been stolen.
Habimana expressed his disappointment with the increasing rate of theft in the area and urged authorities to take swift action.
The suspect was arrested by the Kisoro Central Police Station with case reference S.d ref kisoro cps 05/12/01/2025. At the time of this report, the police had not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
