Businessman Fatally Shoots Son in Lira City

The Territorial Police in Lira City are actively investigating a tragic incident that occurred on the 21st of November 2023, involving a businessman and resident of Ireda Estate, Ogwang Haji Joe, who allegedly shot his biological son, Okello Haron, in Lira City East Division.

According to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the PRO for North Kyoga Region, the circumstances surrounding this incident are currently under intense scrutiny by the Lira City CPS. The preliminary findings suggest that on that fateful day, around 14:45 hours, while Ogwang was conducting his daily business at the Tipper stage in Kamuswahili Cell, Haron, his biological son, confronted him, demanding money. In the course of the confrontation, Haron attempted to disarm his father, who, in an act of self-defense, discharged a bullet, fatally injuring Haron.

Haron was swiftly rushed to Lira Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Initial investigations indicate that Haron was not only an army deserter but also a drug abuser.

The crime scene was promptly attended by both DPCs of Lira City CPS and Lira City West Division, accompanied by Division CID Officers and a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO). Detectives drew a sketch plan, and statements from eyewitnesses were recorded by the police.

A case file with the reference CRB 1002/2023 has been officially opened. A Pistol (No UG IND 99702870) with five rounds of ammunition was recovered and is now part of the evidence. The police are currently working to determine whether Ogwang legally acquired the pistol through the license he holds.

The suspect, Joe Haji Ogwang, voluntarily surrendered himself to the police and is presently in detention at Lira City CPS as investigations into the matter continue. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.
