Police have arrested Nelson Nuwataho in Ibanda District in connection with deadly attacks on residents in Kitenga Sub-county, Mubende District, in which two people were killed, several others injured and property stolen.
Nuwataho was arrested on Monday, October 12, by Crime Intelligence officers in the Rwizi Police Region following leads gathered from the affected villages, according to reports.
He was subsequently handed over to a team from the Wamala Police Region, led by the Regional Police Commander, before being transferred to Mubende Police for interrogation.
The attacks occurred in the early hours of October 9, when assailants reportedly raided homes in three villages in Kitenga Sub-county, killing two residents, injuring others and stealing property.
Among those killed were Ivan Sserwanja, 29, and his pregnant wife, Rose Nakalanzi, 26, who were coffee dealers. The couple were reportedly found dead in their home in Lukaya Village.
Other residents sustained serious injuries during the attacks. They included Onesmus Tumwebaze and Agatha Kukundakwe from Kayanja Village in Nsengwe Parish, as well as Deus Niwamanya and his wife, Kihembo, from Lwengabi Village.
Items reported stolen during the attacks included a motorcycle, registration number UFZ 589C, and mobile phones.
Police have not publicly detailed the evidence linking Nuwataho to the attacks. Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings and robberies and determine whether other suspects were involved.
Meanwhile, authorities have deployed an additional 50 Field Force Unit officers from their headquarters in Naguru to reinforce police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces personnel already operating in Kitenga Sub-county.
The deployment is intended to strengthen security, protect residents and support the ongoing investigations into the deadly attacks.
Nuwataho’s arrest marks a development in the investigation, but the allegations against him remain subject to police inquiries and any subsequent court proceedings. His arrest does not amount to a conviction.
