On the evening of October 12, 2023, a significant operation took place at Namayiba Bus Terminal in Old Kampala, Kampala Central District. This operation was conducted by the Old Kampala Police based on actionable intelligence they received. The police arrested Mr. Nkurunugi Kenneth, a 36-year-old resident of Rukungiri, Buyanjja Sub-county, Buyanjja Town Council. He was found in possession of counterfeit black US dollars worth USD 40,000.

Nkurunugi Kenneth is a former member of the UPDF who retired in 2008 from the General Headquarters in Bombo. Currently, he works as a military trainer in Juba, South Sudan. He had returned to Uganda for a vacation on August 19, 2023, with plans to return to Juba on September 19, 2023, but extended his stay.

According to Kenneth, he was asked to transport the package of counterfeit currency to Juba through Classic Bus. Allegedly, Mr. Musa Adam, a resident of Juba, instructed Kenneth on October 12, 2023, to meet an unidentified person in town who would provide him with the package.

The exchange took place near Total Katwe, close to BMK House, where Kenneth received the sealed box. He then handed it over to Classic Bus staff, particularly a person named Harriet, who confirmed receipt of the package. Kenneth left the scene.

However, he was called back to retrieve the package shortly after, only to find out that it had been left behind. This led to the intervention of the police officers, resulting in Kenneth’s arrest.

Upon inspection, it was determined that the contents of the box were counterfeit black US dollars with a total value of USD 40,000.

The police are actively investigating the case, and more information will be provided as the investigation progresses.
