NTUNGAMO, Uganda — Police in Ntungamo District are investigating circumstances surrounding the suspected poisoning death of a 20-year-old man who was found dead in his rented room in Rubaare Town Council.
The deceased has been identified as Benson Twinamatsiko, a builder and resident of Rubaare II Cell, Kagango Ward in Rubaare Town Council. He originally hailed from Rwakigaju Cell, Kazindiro Parish in Rujumbura County, Rukungiri District.
According to the LC I Chairperson of Rubaare II Cell, Mr. Milton Ndebesa, Twinamatsiko was married to Joanita Nyakato, commonly known as Mutoni, a Rwandan national believed to be in her 20s.
Ndebesa said the deceased is suspected to have died from poisoning during the night between Monday and Tuesday. He explained that the deceased’s wife reportedly raised an alarm at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, informing neighbours that her husband had died.
He further alleged that the couple had been experiencing domestic misunderstandings linked to accusations of infidelity.
The deceased’s elder sister, Ms. Patience Akatukunda, said Twinamatsiko woke up normally on Monday and went to work as usual before returning home in the evening with food that was later prepared for supper.
Akatukunda added that on Tuesday at around 3:00 p.m., Nyakato reportedly contacted a neighbour and informed her that Twinamatsiko had died after allegedly taking rat poison tablets.
Although Nyakato denied any involvement in her husband’s death, some residents expressed suspicion and alleged that she could have orchestrated the incident.
Police detectives from Rubaare Town Council visited the scene, documented evidence, and recorded statements from witnesses as part of ongoing investigations.
A postmortem examination conducted at the scene by Dr. Alex Aryahebwa of Rubaare Health Centre IV confirmed that the deceased died of poisoning. However, the doctor noted that the exact substance involved could not immediately be identified.
Body samples were collected and will be taken to Mulago Hospital for further toxicology analysis to establish the exact poison used.
The body was later handed over to relatives for burial arrangements as investigations continue.
