Oyam, Uganda – Grief and shock have engulfed the community of Aweki village, Abur parish, Ayer sub-county, Kole district after a mother of six children decided to commit suicide last evening at around 9:00 PM. This tragic event occurred after she failed to repay a loan of 1,672,000/= that she acquired from the Rwot-akica village saving and loan association (Bolcup).
According to Apobo Vicky’s report, members of the VSLA Rwot-akica group had been demanding their money from her since she borrowed it in February of this year. Unfortunately, she was unable to pay back the money on time.
The report further states that her husband and family members were planning to sell off the land to help her repay the money. However, she denied this option, insisting that the land should be preserved for taking care of her children, and she would find another alternative to repay the loan. Tragically, she was discovered dead in the morning today around 5:40 AM, hanging on a mango tree with a rope a few meters from her compound, after her disappearance the previous evening at 9:00 PM.
George Oleke, a clan chief of Along clan where the deceased hailed from, confirmed the report, stating that it is very unfortunate for the lady to commit suicide over a loan debt, leaving behind six orphans. He urged members of the public to always seek alternative solutions to the challenges they are facing.
Police from Ayer police station visited the scene, and the deceased’s body was handed over to relatives for burial arrangements.
