Kampala | Uganda — Three individuals, including a gynecologist, a clinic proprietor, and an orthopedic technologist, have been remanded to Luzira Prison in connection with the death of Ritah Nansubuga, a 37-year-old mother who allegedly died following a botched cesarean section at an unauthorized clinic in Mulago.
The accused, Dr. Henry Francis Kadaga (gynecologist), Joel Kiwanuka (proprietor of Sun Set Consults clinic), and Hassan Budhugo (orthopedic technologist) appeared before Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi and were charged with manslaughter and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Nansubuga, a former nursing officer who had returned from working in Dubai, is survived by her one-day-old baby boy.
Unqualified Staff and Illegal Premises Cited
According to the prosecution, the accused “negligently carried out a cesarean operation on Ritah Nansubuga in unsuitable premises and by unprofessional personnel, thereby causing her death.”
Investigations reveal that Nansubuga had initially visited the clinic for a routine antenatal check-up but was allegedly convinced to undergo a C-section at the same facility, despite it lacking the proper medical clearance and qualified surgical staff.
The arrests followed a formal complaint lodged by the deceased’s relatives on September 9, 2025. The case was handled by the State House Health Monitoring Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).
The accused have all denied the charges and were remanded until October 8, 2025, when they are expected to return to court for a bail application hearing.
