A boda boda cyclist in Mukono District has been apprehended by the police after the remains of his wife were discovered in an abandoned pit-latrine. The suspect, who had been on the run, turned himself in over the weekend. The police consider him a key suspect in the murder of Jane Mahoro, a female adult from Luwunga Village in Nama Sub-county, Mukono District.

The cyclist had initially disappeared after informing authorities about his wife, who had gone missing on January 15. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango stated that the arrest followed the retrieval of the body on January 20.

Luwunga Village Chairperson, Mr Patrick Mugerwa, revealed that the discovery occurred during a search prompted by children reporting a foul smell from the pit-latrine near the suspect’s home. Residents became suspicious due to the circumstances, as the cyclist had reported his wife missing on January 16, claiming she had abandoned their children and relocated.

Mugerwa explained that the couple had a history of misunderstandings and fights, known to the residents, though never officially reported. The suspect’s behavior and the suspicious circumstances led to the discovery of the body.

Ssalongo Kawooya, an immediate neighbor, described the boda boda cyclist as uncooperative and quarrelsome with fellow villagers. He restricted his wife and children from interacting with others, often sparking fights if they were seen talking to neighbors.

Maama Alama, the deceased, was a 30-year-old soft-spoken woman, last seen on January 15. The police are actively conducting investigations into the murder, and Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman, Mr Patrick Onyango, confirmed ongoing efforts.

Mukono District reported a total of 71 murder cases out of the 1,085 recorded nationwide by the police in 2022.
