The Kampala Metropolitan Police have announced the arrest of Ashraf Kiiza, the suspect involved in a dramatic robbery captured in a viral video on social media. The police’s specialized unit, the Flying Squad, known for tackling violent crimes, apprehended Kiiza.

The incident occurred on the evening of May 13, 2024, at Bashir Grain Millers in Natete Kutano. Kiiza, armed with a panga (a type of machete) and a hammer, attempted to rob businessman Sam Turyamuhaki in a violent manner. The distressing video shows Kiiza demanding money from Turyamuhaki and assaulting him with the weapons.

Turyamuhaki suffered several injuries, including head wounds, and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.

Kiiza managed to evade authorities for two days. However, on May 15, the diligent efforts of the Flying Squad unit, which is part of the Police Directorate of Crime Intelligence led by Brig. Gen. Christopher Ddamulira, resulted in his capture in the Kyotera district. He has since been transferred to Nateete Police Station for further investigation.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, stated that Kiiza will be prosecuted according to the law.

“The arrest of Ashraf Kiiza marks a significant step in ensuring justice for the victim and maintaining public safety in the region,” Owoyesigyire said.

He also urged citizens to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities promptly.
