Over the weekend, the public was left stunned when it was reported that the son of Kampala tycoon Ssessazi Robert allegedly took his own life at Seeta High School Mukono. Initial reports suggest that 16-year-old Elishama Ssesanga, a Senior 3 student, was discovered hanging from a mosquito net in the early hours of Friday morning.
His fellow students quickly informed the school authorities, who rushed him to the hospital, where he was declared dead. He was laid to rest in Kyotera over the weekend, with some describing him as a pampered wealthy child who chose to end his life because his father denied him 2 million shillings for upkeep.
However, a social media user claiming to have spoken to a family member indicated that this narrative does not align with the truth of the situation. This individual suggested that Ssesanga may have been murdered due to his sexuality. According to this family member, Ssesanga was found unconscious in the hospital and was taken there in urgent need of medical assistance.
Upon arrival, he was pronounced dead and found to have multiple blood clots, according to the postmortem report. Notably, he had opposed homosexual behavior and was allegedly threatened by peers at school. One day, he awoke feeling extremely weak and unwell, and a certain student approached him, demanding 2 million shillings for a supposed cure or he would die.
He contacted his father to explain the situation, but his father did not take him seriously, which ultimately led to his demise. Furthermore, the school is aware that the narrative of suicide is misrepresented, and both the school administration and police are currently investigating the circumstances, particularly regarding the pro-homosexual group at the institution. Alarmingly, reports indicate that another student recently died under similar circumstances at the school during the same term.
“Let’s not rush to post things with out facts!
First this boy might have been killed! As per phone conversation with one of his close family members, he was found lying down in the dormitory unconscious and rushed to hospital, reaching there he was declared dead with multiple blood clots as per postmortem report!
He was an active anti-homosexual activist and one day, he was intimidated by some of the people in the group at their school, so recently he woke up very weak and ill, a certain student approached him and told him to get 2m for the cure or else he was going to die or his family spent 30m plus to get the cure! So he called his father and explained to him everything! His dad didn’t take him serious till his boy died! Go to the school and ask, the boy didn’t commit suicide as portrayed! Police and school administration are trying to get on top of this with investigations on that group of homosexuals in the school. I have been informed that previously another kid died in the same manner! this very term at the same school,” the netizens narrated in his alleged conversation with the family member.
The issue of homosexuality in Ugandan schools, especially in single-sex institutions, has been a prevalent topic in common discourse for a long time. It is a subject that many have discussed, yet authorities seem hesitant to address. Whether in all-girls or all-boys schools, the problem has escalated significantly, and it appears that there are foreign influences and individuals within the schools contributing to this behavior.
Previously, there were suggestions to eliminate single-sex schools, but these proposals faced strong opposition from various influential groups, particularly religious organizations that are directly involved in funding many of these schools.
