Obongi, Uganda: On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, there were two shooting incidents involving the police. On Tuesday night, a suspected thief was apprehended by wanainchi who wanted to lynch him due to his suspected stealing habits.
Police fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd, which had become a bit rowdy due to the anger caused by the suspected thief. Again, on Wednesday night, there was another shooting incident.
A suspected phone thief who had escaped from police custody was captured by wanainchi attempting to burn him with tires. The police fired shots into the air and re-arrested the suspect, Talib Rajab, son of Yusuf, from Obongi Town Council.
The 20-year-old Talib was taken to Moyo court on Thursday. However, the Residents District Commissioner, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, has requested members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but to deal with such culprits according to the rule of law.
The phone snatcher was arrested by the community on Wednesday night after escaping from police custody. Talib Rajab survived a potentially lethal situation after the police fired shots into the air to disperse the mob. Attempts to contact the West Nile police PRO were futile by press time since she did not answer our repeated phone calls.
