Police in Entebbe Detain Four Individuals After Fatal Incident

Police in Entebbe have arrested four individuals in connection with the death of a fellow Muslim in the Nkumba-Kisembi Ward. The incident occurred following a conflict within the Muslim community regarding mosque management affairs, resulting in the tragic loss of Kiggundu Ahmed’s life.

According to Luke Oweyesigyire, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the conflict allegedly erupted at around 9:00 pm. Kiggundu Ahmed managed to escape and sought refuge at Kasenyi police station due to the severity of his injuries. He was subsequently transferred to Meditake Healthcare in Nkumba but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.

Oweyesigyire stated, “Four individuals have been arrested and are currently detained at Entebbe police station. We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned during this investigation.”

Umaru Wangi, a business partner of the deceased, explained that the fight broke out when Muslim members attacked Kiggundu Ahmed as he returned from prayers. The conflict initially stemmed from Ahmed’s intention to officially hand over the receipt book to a security guard who had just reported for duty at the mosque’s parking yard.

“These people have constantly threatened us over mosque and Muslim affairs, insisting they should be the ones collecting money from the mosque’s parking yard without working. Since the former security guard resigned recently, they have been pressuring us to relinquish control of the money until last night when they killed our colleague,” Umaru recounted.

During the altercation, the security guard was initially attacked and beaten before the assailants turned their attention to Ahmed, who attempted to defend himself until he was struck on the head with a metallic gate from the parking yard.

“When I narrowly escaped the attack,” Umaru continued, “I raised an alarm, and locals came to our rescue. Ahmed initially rode his motorcycle to seek refuge at Kasenyi police station, but unfortunately, he began bleeding from various parts of his body when he returned. I rushed him to a nearby clinic, where he was declared dead.”

Aryatwijuka Vicent, Defense Officer of Nkumba Ward, suggested that the group responsible for the attack on Ahmed at the mosque was allegedly orchestrated by the previous leadership of the mosque, which has been embroiled in long-standing disputes over the mosque’s financial management.

“The current leadership and the previous one of this mosque have not been on good terms, but all I want is justice for the family of the deceased,” Aryatwijuka noted.

The mosque in question includes a parking yard and a primary school owned by the leadership of Answari mosque. Sheikh Hanzal Farouk, the county Sheikh of Katabi town council, confirmed that an interim leadership committee had been formed to oversee the mosque’s management, finances, and reconciliation with the previous leadership before the incident occurred.

Hanzal emphasized, “The issues that led to the death of our colleague are financial, not religious, because we have consistently convened meetings to discuss how to resolve these issues over time.”

Upon her arrival at the mosque, Entebbe Subdistrict Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Jackline Akakunda announced that she had petitioned the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council to intervene in the escalating conflicts within Entebbe mosques, particularly regarding land disputes.

The deceased’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.
