Entebbe Airport Customs recently intercepted 325 high-end phones as part of “Operation Holy Grail”. During Women’s Month, the Customs team focused on combating the illegal importation of phones by travelers from various destinations worldwide. They encountered unexpected challenges posed by smugglers.

The Customs team encountered several individuals, often referred to as “mules”, who demonstrated remarkable tactics in their attempts to smuggle phones. One such individual caught the attention of the team due to his peculiar fashion accessory—a cosset. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the cosset was not merely a fashion statement but a clever concealment for smuggling. The team discovered 36 pieces of the latest Apple and Samsung models hidden within the cosset.

Another smuggler attracted attention with unusually prominent calf muscles. Upon closer inspection, the officers found 39 pieces of assorted mobile phones concealed within the smuggler’s calves. Additionally, phones were discovered hidden within PlayStation consoles, automotive spare parts, garments, and computer accessories.

By the conclusion of Operation Holy Grail, a total of 325 assorted smartphones, valued at approximately USD 70,000, had been seized by the Customs team. Offense management procedures are now underway to address the smuggling attempts.

The Customs authorities urge travelers to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when approached by individuals offering monetary incentives to assist them through customs. Often, when a mule is apprehended, the true owner of the smuggled goods is nowhere to be found, leaving the mule to face legal consequences alone.
