Police at Kamdini Police Station in Oyam District are holding seven people connected with the possession of ivory.
They were apprehended on Wednesday morning at Apala B village, Juma Parish, Kamdini Sub County, Oyam District, after concerned locals alerted UWA (Uganda Wildlife Authority) collaborations and police officers about their illegal possession of ivory and poaching in Karuma Murchison Falls National Park. Immediately, police from Kamdini, together with the Uganda Wildlife team, went to the ground, and ivory was recovered from them.
According to an eyewitness from Apala B village, the seven people, whose names were not declared by the police, consist of six males and a lady. They are still under police custody at Kamdini Police Station, pending further investigation.
Edison Muhangi, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Oyam District, confirmed the arrest but refused to provide details on them.
Ramadan Obita, the Officer in Charge (OC) of Kamdini Police Station, says the investigation on the suspects is ongoing.
