Police in Serere District are investigating the death of Pastor John Michael Ekamu, 52, who allegedly suffered injuries during a prayer session at Agule Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) Church in Ocuko Village, Kateta Sub-county, on Christmas Eve.

The incident occurred when a 30-year-old man, identified as Osagani from Mutebe Village in Omagara Parish, who had arrived from Kampala that day, was brought to the church for prayers by his father, Simon Ogwang.

According to East Kyoga Regional Police Commander (RPC) Ms. Damalie Nachuha, Ogwang claimed his son was experiencing demonic attacks.

During the prayer session, Osagani allegedly assaulted Pastor Ekamu, causing him to fall. Despite this, the prayer session continued, and the pastor, along with some worshippers, remained at the church overnight.

On Christmas morning, around 8:00 AM, while leading prayers, Pastor Ekamu collapsed at the pulpit. Worshippers suggested taking him to a health center, but he refused, stating, “the devil has been defeated.” As his condition deteriorated, he was eventually transported to Serere Health Center IV, where medical examinations revealed internal injuries, including damage to his pancreas.

Despite attempts to perform surgery around 3:00 PM, Pastor Ekamu succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The body was subsequently transported to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and the suspect remains in custody.
