Police in Kabale District have arrested one person and are actively searching for others involved in the severe assault of a 14-year-old boy, Obama Ramathani, who was attacked on suspicion of being a criminal.

According to Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman, ASP Elly Maate, the incident occurred in December 2024, though the exact date and time remain unclear. The attack took place in Rushambya Cell, Kirigime Ward, Kabale Municipality.

It is alleged that in early December 2024, at an unknown time, the suspect, along with others who are still at large, severely assaulted the victim, suspecting him of being a thief who had attempted to steal from Orishaba Catherine’s house. The attackers reportedly beat Obama so badly that he was left unconscious and dumped in the bush.

A passing neighbor discovered the victim in great pain and called his father, Tibanyendera Ramathani, who immediately took him to the hospital for treatment. Upon examination, doctors found that the victim’s legs had rotted to the point of developing cancer, requiring both legs to be amputated.

On January 1, 2025, the victim’s father reported the incident to Kabale Police Station, where a case of attempted murder was filed. Police visited the crime scene, conducted an investigation, and recorded statements from witnesses. The victim is still receiving treatment at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

One suspect has been arrested, though his identity has not been disclosed to avoid compromising ongoing investigations. Police continue to search for the remaining suspects involved in the assault, according to ASP Elly Maate.
