Police have arrested individuals suspected of attacking Bishop Zac Niringiye. The arrest follows an incident on July 29, 2024, when the bishop was assaulted during his afternoon run.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma confirmed the arrests in a press briefing held on August 5, 2024, at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala. Kituuma explained that the bishop was followed by the assailants who then struck him and stole his belongings. The swift police response and investigation led to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
A video of the assault, showing Bishop Niringiye with blood on his head, gained widespread attention on social media. Although Kituuma provided updates on the arrests, he did not reveal the names of the suspects or their current locations due to the ongoing investigation.
Retired Bishop Zac Niringiye was attacked on Monday July 29, 2024 last week by unknown assailants who struck him with a brick. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. near Legacy Courts in Ntinda, Nakawa Division, Kampala City.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the attack and provided details about the incident. According to Owoyesigyire, the assailants fled the scene after the assault. The police are currently reviewing surveillance footage to identify the attackers.
Bishop Niringiye was reported to be in stable condition and has since been discharged from the hospital. The attackers stole one of his two phones during the incident. Family members reported that the bishop was out for a walk when the attack occurred.
This incident follows a series of recent attacks in the city. Last week, CCTV cameras captured a boda boda gang robbing an Indian national of sh5 million and two phones on Mawanda Road. Additionally, earlier in the month, Buganda Road Special Utility Chief Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu was attacked and robbed of sh1.7 million and phones in Namuwongo. She was also struck by the assailants but was rescued by passersby and received medical treatment.
Following the violent assault, Retired Bishop Zac Niringiye took to social media to update the public on his condition. The attack occurred around noon, and the bishop expressed his gratitude to those who assisted him.
In his post, Bishop Niringiye thanked the individuals who transported him to the hospital and the medical professionals who treated him. He reassured his followers that he is recovering well from the injuries. “My brain is well. I’m recovering from injuries; physically, mentally, and emotionally strong,” he wrote.
The bishop also shared a message of resilience and hope for the future, stating, “This is Uganda! Let’s all work for a better future!”
