On March 11, 2024, around 7:50 PM, a fatal accident occurred at Kibimba after the bridge along the Iganga-Tororo highway in Bugiri District. The territorial traffic police in Bugiri documented the incident, which resulted in the tragic death of ten individuals at the scene.
Preliminary reports suggest that the ten motor vehicles involved were all traveling in the direction towards Tororo, except for one vehicle, bearing registration number KAE 254c/ZA 5971, a tanker loaded with molasses, which was moving in the opposite direction towards Iganga.
One of the vehicles, registered as UAW 963m, a Toyota HiAce, attempted to overtake a line of vehicles. However, while overtaking, the driver noticed an approaching vehicle and attempted to yield by swerving to the left. Unfortunately, the oncoming vehicle was a trailer tanker loaded with molasses and towing another trailer.
As a result of the maneuver, the rear part of the trailer collided with the taxi, causing it to be crushed against another trailer, registered as KBJ 155c/ZD 2621, a Mercedes Benz. Subsequently, the trailer tanker lost control, overturned, and erupted in flames.
The collision led to the tragic loss of ten lives on the spot, including eight passengers of the taxi, its driver, and the driver of the trailer tanker.
Following the incident, the traffic police promptly responded to the scene, and the bodies of the victims were transported to Bugiri hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
The Police Force extended condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident, and said investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
