Police have arrested one suspect in connection with a burglary and theft incident that occurred on February 20, 2026, at around 11:00 p.m. in Sofia Town, Mirama Town Council, Ntungamo District.
According to police, the incident happened at the residence of Kabagambe Isaak, a businessman operating at the Mirama border. Investigations indicate that after closing work at the border, the complainant returned home at around 11:00 p.m. and opened his door as usual. Upon entering, he noticed that his house had been ransacked.
He immediately rushed to Mirama Police Station and reported the matter, requesting support from the Police Canine Unit from Ntungamo Central Police Station.
Police said the victim later checked his bedroom and was shocked to find three intruders — two standing beside the bed and one hiding underneath it. He raised an alarm and ran outside, screaming for help. The suspects reportedly escaped through a hole they had dug behind the house. Although community members responded quickly, they were unable to apprehend them.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira said a team of canine officers and investigators responded swiftly to the scene. A police sniffer dog named “Yudah” was introduced to the scent trail from the crime scene.
“The dog tracked the scent for approximately 700 metres, leading officers to the home of a suspect identified as Itmana Denis, who was arrested. Another suspect, identified only as Junior, is currently on the run,” Kasasira said.
He added that a search conducted at the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of a hammer and an iron bar believed to have been used in the burglary. During interrogation, Itmana Denis allegedly confessed to participating in the crime.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, while police intensify efforts to apprehend the second suspect.
