KAMPALA, Uganda – The Uganda Police Force has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as “hooliganism” after a series of violent incidents during a National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential campaign event in Kawempe on Monday left seven security officers seriously injured.

According to a press release from Police Headquarters, the violence erupted despite prior meetings between the police, the Electoral Commission, and the NUP organizing committee to agree on venues and routes for the candidate’s activities in Kawempe North and South.

The statement notes that security officers came under attack at multiple locations. The initial assault began at the NUP headquarters, where officers were pelted with stones. The same act of violence was repeated at the Bwaise Roundabout and later at the main campaign venue.

“Currently, seven security officers have sustained serious injuries,” the police release stated. “Several security vehicles were also damaged by the crowd, including an ambulance.”

Faced with the escalating situation, security personnel reportedly implemented public-order measures to disperse the crowds and restore calm. The police confirmed that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the attacks.

In its statement, the police force was unequivocal: “We strongly condemn the hooliganism displayed today and stress that such behaviour is unacceptable. It will be met with firm action.”

The incident highlights the heightened tensions surrounding the ongoing campaign season and raises concerns about the safety of security personnel deployed to manage large political gatherings. The police have not released the identities of the injured officers or the specific charges facing the arrested suspects.
