Police Investigate Alleged Gang Rape of Kampala City Medic

Saturday, December 30, 2023

Police in Kampala are actively searching for individuals accused of gang-raping a medical professional on Boxing Day night. The victim, whose identity is being protected, reported being attacked by men dressed in army uniforms.

Authorities, including both police and health officials, have gathered statements and blood samples from an apartment in a Kampala suburb, the alleged crime scene. The victim’s identity has been withheld for her safety. A police officer, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that crime intelligence detectives were dispatched to collect samples for the investigation.

The officer stated that when they arrived at the victim’s residence, it appeared she was living alone, contradicting information from a relative who claimed she should have been in Butabika for treatment but chose not to go. The police officer emphasized that details about the incident cannot be disclosed to the press without the victim’s consent.

In response to questions about the ongoing investigation and whether suspects were in custody, the police officer cited explicit instructions from the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson not to disclose information to the public due to the need to protect the rape victim.

The victim, whose name remains undisclosed, reported the incident after being attacked by men in army uniforms. Following the report, detectives initiated an investigation, and the victim underwent medical examinations at a nearby government health center before being released.

A guard at the rented apartment confirmed police presence during the investigation, and a neighbor, identified as Anne, recalled hearing the victim shouting on Tuesday evening. The neighbor, however, did not pay much attention, assuming the victim was seeking help.

The health center’s officer in charge mentioned examining two cases of alleged rape on the same Wednesday, involving a woman in her mid-20s and a teenage “lesbian couple” aged 15 and 16. A psychiatrist who assessed the victim revealed signs of trauma, bruises on her private parts, and the loss of her hymen. Although the victim tested negative for HIV/AIDS, post-exposure prophylaxis was prescribed.
