Two police officers from Buwenge Central Police Station have been arrested following accusations of torturing Paulo Gusango to death.

The incident began when Gusango’s wife, Sharifah Katono, fled their home in Kibundaile village, Namagera town council, Jinja district, after a domestic dispute. She sought refuge at her parents’ home in Kalebera East village, Buwenge sub-county, Jinja district, where she and her brothers filed an assault case against Gusango.

Upon learning of the case, Gusango attempted to peacefully resolve the matter at his in-laws’ home. However, they instead called the police to arrest him.

Upon seeing police, Gusango fled and hid in a nearby private forest reserve. Police officers eventually located him, allegedly subjected him to severe beating, and subsequently brought him to Buwenge Central Police Station.

After nearly three hours in custody, Gusango’s health deteriorated, prompting police to contact his father, Ronald Guloba, around 7:00 pm. Gusango was initially taken to Teso Clinic but his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to Buwenge General Hospital, where he passed away on Thursday.

Ronald Guloba suspects that his son died from injuries sustained during the alleged police torture.

An anonymous police source from Buwenge Police Station disclosed that the accused officers took advantage of the absence of the division commander to clean blood stains from the cells, crucial evidence in the case.

Following pressure from Gusango’s relatives, senior police commanders in Buwenge intervened, leading to the arrest of the implicated officers.

James Mubi, the Kiira Regional Police Commander, confirmed the arrest and detention of the officers at Buwenge Central Police Station. He further stated that detectives have been dispatched to apprehend Gusango’s in-laws, who are also implicated in his death.
