Business tycoon Hajji Suleiman Mafabi Lumolo has confirmed to detectives that the robbery at his residence in Muyenga, Kampala, orchestrated by five policemen, resulted in the loss of his wife’s sh41 million and sh2.2 billion belonging to him. Ambassador Barbra Oundo Nekesa, Uganda’s High Commissioner to South Africa and NRM treasurer, was alone in the house on December 05, 2023, when she was attacked by four police officers.
Investigations by the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) revealed that the attackers were invited by counterterrorism policeman Micheal Wango, who had been guarding the home. Wango disconnected electricity on the razor fence, altered CCTV camera directions, and switched off lights to facilitate the intrusion. Wango and his colleague disguised the attack as a robbery by strangers.
Inside the compound, the attackers, identified as Arinda, Idro, Nuwagaba, and Mugoya, compelled maids to open the main house, where they demanded money from Nekesa’s bedroom. The group packed the money in five bags, took an iPhone, and later transported the money to a waiting bodaboda rider in a banana plantation. They spent over 10 hours in the compound, erasing CCTV evidence upon leaving.
Ambassador Nekesa initially reported the theft of sh41 million, but her husband discovered the additional loss of sh2.2 billion. Forensic experts found fingerprints on two guns supposedly taken by the robbers, which belonged to Wango. The stolen money was distributed among the police officers, with Watson taking sh200 million, Kalinda sh20 million, and Mugoya sh230 million.
Twelve suspects, including Wango, were arrested after being found sharing money from a sack containing some of the stolen funds. Other suspects include Samuel Opio, Patrick Aponyo, Matia Lulangwa, Pallaso, and Masembe.
