The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has issued new directives to bar owners nationwide in response to an increase in violent incidents at bars. The police have noted a rise in bar-related incidents, including stabbings, fights, hospitalizations, and occasional fatalities.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga emphasized the importance of implementing appropriate measures in bars to identify and address incidents before they escalate. He cited recent examples, including a fatal attack on Corporal Kenneth Amanya and a stabbing incident involving a couple at a drinking joint.
Enanga highlighted the lack of adequate security measures in some bars, including the absence of stewards and poorly trained bouncers. He urged bar owners to hire certified stewards, install CCTV cameras for surveillance, and set up medical facilities to provide first aid to injured patrons.
The police warned that bar owners could face legal consequences, including charges of negligence and complacency, if crimes are concealed or poorly managed. Territorial commanders are preparing a catalog of profiled incidents at bars, which may lead to recommendations for the closure or removal of operating licenses for establishments with recurring issues.
These directives aim to enhance safety and curb violence in bars, ensuring a more secure environment for patrons and reducing the occurrence of alcohol and drug-fueled crimes.
