The death toll from a recent rebel attack in the western Uganda district of Kamwenge has reached 10, according to local authorities. Byarugaba Isaiah Kanyamahane, the resident district commissioner for Kamwenge, reported that suspected members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group, were responsible for the attack. The victims, comprising five males and five females, were all civilians.

Kanyamahane, who also serves as the chairperson of the security committee in the district, stated that the assault occurred at Kyabandara Parish in Kamwenge District around 1:00 a.m. (2200 GMT Monday). Security forces are actively pursuing the assailants within the Kibale National Park forest. While several individuals sustained injuries during the attack, the exact number remains unconfirmed.

Last week, the military disclosed that two ADF rebels had been killed, and a commander was injured in Kibale National Park, a portion of which is situated in Kamwenge. President Yoweri Museveni recently acknowledged that rebels had entered the country following intense bombardment in the neighboring eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since 2021, a joint force of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces and the DRC has been pursuing the rebels in the Congo.
