Rubanda Woman Arrested After Fatal Struggle with Husband

Kigezi Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate.

Police in Rubanda District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Julius Rwanyarare, a resident of Nyarurambi Cell, Ikamaro Parish, Muko Sub-County.

Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate told journalists that the deceased is suspected to have been killed by his wife, Estali Nyangire, during a long-standing family dispute marked by domestic violence. According to Maate, Rwanyarare habitually assaulted his wife upon returning home.

Maate reported that on the night of March 13, 2025, Rwanyarare returned home intoxicated and began assaulting his wife. He then attempted to strike her with a hoe. During the altercation, his wife managed to seize the hoe and struck him on the head, inflicting severe injuries.

Neighbors, including the area LC1 Chairperson Milton Byaruhanga, were alerted to the incident. Byaruhanga took Rwanyarare to a nearby clinic for medical treatment.

On March 15, 2025, Rwanyarare’s condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for further care, where he subsequently died.

Nyangire was apprehended by local residents and handed over to Muko Police Station for further investigation. A team of homicide officers and the district Scene of Crime Officer responded to the scene, documenting the incident and recovering a small hoe, which is being treated as evidence.

Maate stated that a postmortem examination has been conducted, and the body has been released to the family for burial as the investigation continues.
