Rukungiri, Uganda – Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Katsigazi Erias, a 48-year-old shopkeeper and resident of Omukacundezi village, Kisizi parish, Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district.

On February 1, 2025, Mr. Katsigazi was at his shop, which also served as his home. At approximately 9:30 PM, he had supper with his family before closing the shop, after which they went inside the house to sleep. At around 11:00 PM, his wife, Tumuhereze Pamela, began calling for help. Their child, Tukesiga Recub, responded and found his mother lying face down near the inner doorway, with her hands loosely tied behind her back with a rope and her face covered with a cloth.

Ms. Tumuhereze urged her son to check on his father. Tukesiga found his father in the bedroom, lying in a pool of blood. He immediately called neighbors for assistance, including Nuwagaba Adella, who helped untie his mother.

A thorough examination of the crime scene revealed no signs of forced entry or a break-in, raising questions about the events of the night. Ms. Tumuhereze’s account that four individuals attacked them inside the house has been met with skepticism.

Officers from Rubabo Police Station examined and documented the crime scene. Mr. Katsigazi’s body was transported to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem examination. Ms. Tumuhereze was arrested to assist with the investigation.

Inquiries into the case are ongoing, according to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson.
