Police in Budaka District are investigating health workers from Lyama Health Centre III for allegedly stealing government drugs. Mr Joseph Masolo, a senior clinical officer at the facility, reported the theft. According to SP Samuel Semewo, the suspects allegedly stole drugs worth Shs68,590,033. The stolen drugs include Artosonate, MRDT, D-ARTEPP, and RDT test kits.

A security guard from the same facility has been arrested to aid the investigation. He had a history of involvement in petty thefts, although they were previously managed by administrators. The stolen drugs were kept in the facility’s store, accessible with keys held by the in-charge and the security guard. The theft was discovered on January 30, 2024, when empty boxes were found despite intact padlocks. It’s suspected that a duplicate key was used.

The police have registered the case and recovered empty boxes from the store for investigation. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend any other suspects involved in the theft.
