In the quiet of the early morning, under the sleepy sky of Buwenge, Jinja District, a devastating incident took place at an MTN Service Centre. The life of Calvin Abia, a dedicated security guard, was cruelly cut short in a way that has left the community in shock.

As the clock struck 1 a.m. on that fateful Wednesday, two men with darkness in their hearts and guns in their hands stormed the premises. Abia, who worked with Ultimate Security and was on assignment for EV Assets Management Company Limited, found himself face-to-face with danger while doing what he did best, looking out for others.

Before the shooting, Abia had reportedly left his usual post to visit John Ssabagabo, a young guard of 20 years, with whom he shared a working history at Wolves Security in Jinja City. The visit was meant to be one of camaraderie and familiarity, but little did he know that a lion does not sleep in the same den as a sheep.

In a moment of terror, a single gunshot rang out. Abia was struck in the head, leaving no chance for farewell or goodbyes. His lifeless body was later taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem, a heartbreaking sight for anyone who loved him.

The police, determined to unravel this mystery, have arrested Ssabagabo and Patrick Obbo, a fellow security guard aged 40. Both men were on duty at the time of the attack, and they are now helping authorities with the investigation. A lone cartridge case was found, and a sniffer dog has joined the hunt, following trails to where the truth might hide.

The Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi, has called upon the community for help. He assured that any information shared would be kept secret, for as the wise say, “A whisper in the ears of justice may be the roar that catches a thief.”

The attack has left many with unanswered questions about the safety of those who stand guard for others, often putting their lives on the line. As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: even the strongest walls need watchful eyes, and every soul deserves to be guarded from the shadows that roam in the dark.

Let this tragedy be a wake-up call for better security measures, because when the roots of a tree are safe, the leaves can flourish. Abia’s memory deserves nothing less.
