The spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, Luke Owoyesigire, has issued a statement regarding a private security guard who fatally shot two colleagues in Nakawa. This incident occurred on January 30, 2025, at precisely 9:00 AM at Shumuk Aluminium Ltd, situated in Nakawa Division.
“Police at Jinja Road are investigating a tragic incident of murder by shooting that occurred today, 30th January 2025 , at approximately 0900 hours at Shumuk Aluminium Ltd, Nakawa Division.”
The shooting was perpetrated by Machugayi Emmanuel, a security guard associated with Ryayo Security Group Ltd. According to the police statement, Machugayi acquired the firearm from a fellow guard. Without any provocation, he shot and killed two of his colleagues, Kakyebezi Ashraf, who was 22 years old, and Owechi Stephen.
Following this brutal act, the shooter returned to his post but eventually took his own life with the same weapon after realizing that security forces had surrounded the area.
“Preliminary findings indicate that a security guard, Machugayi Emmanuel, attached to Ryayo Security Group Ltd, accessed a firearm from a colleague and, without provocation, fatally shot two fellow security guards: Kakyebezi Ashiraf (21 years old) and Owechi Stephen. Following the attack, the suspect retreated and later turned the gun on himself after realizing he was surrounded by security forces.”
The police swiftly responded to the situation and dispatched a team of officers to conduct an investigation. The three deceased individuals were transported to the KCCA mortuary for a postmortem examination. Two rifles and several cartridges were retrieved from the crime scene.
Currently, the motive behind the shooting is under investigation. Meanwhile, the police have urged the public to stay calm as inquiries progress.

They have repeatedly misused their authority to bear firearms by directing them at their victims, resulting in fatal consequences or serious injuries. Prior to this incident, a security guard in Kansanga, known as Nathan Ariyo, shot and killed his landlord, Kiyega, over unpaid rent.
