A senior official in Kamuli District has been arrested for allegedly failing to account for Shs1.3 billion allocated for road construction projects, raising renewed concerns about financial accountability in local government.
The arrest of Daniel Mufumba, the district engineer, was confirmed by Kigulu North MP Martin Muzaale, who also chairs the Kamuli District Roads Committee. According to Muzaale, Mufumba was detained following repeated failures to provide satisfactory documentation and explanations on how the road fund was spent.
“We are investigating the matter, and we will ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Muzaale said on Wednesday.
The funds were part of a central government allocation aimed at improving road infrastructure in Kamuli. However, discrepancies in financial reporting and a lack of visible progress on the projects triggered an internal probe by the Roads Committee.
Authorities have now demanded that Mufumba provide a comprehensive breakdown of how the Shs1.3 billion was used. If he fails to do so, further legal action may be taken.
The incident has stirred public outrage, with residents questioning the stalled road works and demanding full accountability for the allegedly misused funds.
The District Roads Committee has vowed to carry out a full audit and ensure that all individuals implicated in the suspected mismanagement face justice.
