Police in Kamwenge District are investigating an incident where four family members were brutally hacked to death, and the suspected assailant was subsequently lynched by enraged residents.

The incident occurred on Monday at 10 pm in Rwenchwera village, Kinyonza ward, Nkoma Katalyeba Town Council. The deceased are identified as Gladys Turyahebwa (42), the mother, and her children Anita Nuwamanya (18), Susan Ainemani (16), and Onesta Atusasire (9).

According to Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori West region police spokesperson, three individuals lost their lives at the scene, while Susan Ainemani succumbed to injuries at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital on Tuesday morning.

The alleged assailant, Sam Asiimwe (33), a resident of the same village and a neighbor to the victims, was lynched by angry residents. Denis Turyabe, the family head, was away in the nearby trading center at the time of the incident.

The cause of the brutal attack is yet to be determined, and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and the motive of the assailant.

Sam Bahati, the chairperson of Nkoma Ward, reported that only one child, a 1-year-old, survived as they weren’t inside the house during the attack. After committing the crime, the suspect locked himself inside the same house, but an alarm had already been raised, prompting neighbors to intervene and subsequently lynching him.

The community remains shocked and puzzled about the motive behind the brutal attack.
