Lira, North Kyoga Region – The North Kyoga Region police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, has confirmed that a suspected thief was burnt to death by a mob in Ireda Shamba cell, Lira City West Division, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, at around 1:00 am.
According to SP Okema, a group of residents chased an unidentified individual suspected of theft and caught up with them in Ireda Shamba cell. The mob subsequently beat and set the suspect on fire.
Police from Lira City West Division were alerted to the incident and responded to the scene. A team led by the Deputy OC CID, along with homicide and SOCO units, documented the crime scene and interviewed witnesses. The deceased, found with severe burns and bruises, was transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
SP Okema strongly condemned the mob action, emphasizing that Articles 22 and 24 of the Ugandan Constitution protect the right to life and human dignity. He urged the public to cooperate with the police by providing information about suspected criminals instead of resorting to violence.
