Six Arrested in Mukono Child’s Murder Investigation

Thursday, October 5, 2023

In Mukono District, a tragic incident unfolded as a three-year-old child, Hope Biyinzika, who had gone missing from her home in Namaliiri trading centre, Kasawo subcounty, was found dead. The discovery of her mutilated body in a nearby pit latrine has raised suspicions of ritual sacrifice.

Hope Biyinzika was last seen on September 22, when she returned home from Skylak Junior School, which is located near her parents’ house. Despite a week-long search and rescue operation, she could not be located.

The child’s parents were not at home when she returned from school, leaving her in the care of her older siblings. It is believed that during this time, the perpetrators seized the opportunity to abduct and ultimately kill the young girl.

The parents reported her disappearance to the police, but a day later, they received a distressing phone call demanding a ransom of Shs5 million for her safe return. Negotiations led to the ransom being reduced to Shs2.8 million, of which Shs1 million was paid in installments via mobile money. However, even after paying part of the ransom, Hope was not returned to her family.

Frustrated by the lack of progress, the parents sought assistance from Gen Katumba Wamala, the Minister for Transport and Works, who also resides in the area. Gen Katumba involved the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in the search for the missing child.

The investigation took a significant turn when security agencies tracked the phone call data used for the ransom payment. They discovered that the individual receiving the money had been staying in a house near the Biyinzika family’s home during the time of the abduction.

Further examination of call logs revealed frequent contact between one of the house’s occupants and the phone’s owner. This discovery raised suspicions about their involvement.

Additionally, an unpleasant odor coming from the toilets near the Biyinzika residence led to the discovery of Hope’s decomposing body in a pit latrine. Her body had been mutilated, with her neck slit and her tongue, private parts, and breasts removed.

In response to these developments, six individuals from the neighborhood were arrested by security operatives. Among the suspects is a witchdoctor, according to a security source. The police are continuing their investigation into the matter, believing that these individuals are connected to the tragic murder of the innocent child.
