KIBOGA, Uganda — Three people have been confirmed dead following a fatal shooting incident at Uganda Prisons Service facility in Kiboga District, authorities have said.
According to a press statement issued by the Commissioner General of Prisons, a prison warder identified as No. 13544 Warden Anguyo Moses allegedly opened fire on his supervisors at Kiboga Prison at about 10:00pm on Sunday night.
Those killed in the incident have been identified as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, who was serving as Deputy Officer in Charge; Principal Officer I Bright Akishuri, the third in command at the facility; and Ms. Ayebare Sarah, the spouse of the Officer in Charge.
Prisons authorities described the incident as unfortunate and confirmed that the suspect fled the facility immediately after the shooting.
Security agencies, including the Uganda Police Force, were promptly alerted and secured the scene. A joint security operation has since been launched to track down the suspect, who remains at large and is considered dangerous.
Officials confirmed that the firearm used in the shooting has been recovered. Members of the public with any information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts have been urged to report to the nearest police station.
The Uganda Prisons Service said investigations are ongoing and pledged to provide updates as more details emerge.
In the official statement signed by Senior Commissioner of Prisons and Service Spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja, the prisons leadership expressed condolences to the families of the deceased.
“May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” the statement read.
