Police in Mityana are investigating an aggravated robbery that occurred at the residence of Mityana Municipal Council Mayor Faustino Mukambwe Lukonge. The incident took place on August 6, 2024, at 2:45 a.m. in the Kayunga Kimemete cell, central division of Mityana municipality.

According to initial reports, unidentified assailants, armed with machetes and wearing cloth masks, forced their way into Lukonge’s home. They demanded money and caused damage to the window glass. Despite the mayor’s attempts to call for help, the robbers continued their demands.

In fear for his safety, Lukonge handed over UGX 900,000 through a window. The robbers also asked for his phone, which he gave them before they fled the scene, leaving behind broken glass.

Wamala Police Region spokesperson Racheal Kawala reported that a police task force, led by the Mityana District Police Commander, quickly responded to the crime scene. A case of aggravated robbery has been registered at Mityana Police Station under SD Ref 05/06/08/2024, and investigations are ongoing.

A police canine unit was brought to the scene but lost the scent, indicating that the suspects may have escaped on motorcycles. Kawala confirmed that the robbers received the money through the window but did not enter the house, and Lukonge was not injured.

The police are working diligently to track down and arrest the suspects.
