LIRA CITY, UGANDA – Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a fatal road accident that claimed two lives on the evening of September 11, 2025, along Juba Road near the Ober Road junction.
According to Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 PM and involved a motorcycle and a fuel tanker.
It is alleged that the fuel tanker, bearing registration number KCP 773P/ZF 8452, was travelling from Kamdini towards Lira City. At the same time, a Bajaj motorcycle, registration UDZ 717W, was heading in the opposite direction from Lira City to Kamdini.
The motorcyclist, who was carrying a female passenger believed to be his wife, reportedly attempted to dodge an unknown pedestrian who was suddenly crossing the road at Ober junction. In the process, the rider lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with the fuel tanker.
“Both the rider and the passenger died instantly at the scene,” SP Okema confirmed.
Police officers from both Lira Central Police Station and City West Division responded to the scene immediately after being notified.
The two bodies, which are yet to be identified, were conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Both the motorcycle and the fuel tanker were towed to Lira City West Police Station for further inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).
The driver of the fuel tanker is currently on the run, and police have launched a manhunt to locate him.
“We appeal to the driver to report to the nearest police station to assist with ongoing investigations,” SP Okema added.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
