(Kampala) – Muhammad Ali Abdul Amidu, an Egyptian diplomat, was abducted by unknown individuals on November 8, 2024, along Zanna Entebbe Road in Uganda. According to the Uganda Police Force, the kidnappers demanded a $40,000 ransom, threatening to harm the diplomat if their demands were not met. The incident was reported to the Jinja Road Police Division, prompting an immediate investigation.
Uganda’s Crime Intelligence Unit, in collaboration with the Directorate of Intelligence Services of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), quickly began tracking the kidnappers. Authorities reported that the suspects moved between various locations before being intercepted on November 13, 2024. Around 2:00 PM that day, officers were able to locate the kidnappers’ vehicle, a Toyota Noah with registration number UAZ 247S, which carried three occupants.
The kidnappers were intercepted while traveling toward Pearl Motel in Buloba, Wakiso District. During the rescue operation, a confrontation ensued between law enforcement and the suspects, resulting in one of the kidnappers being neutralized. The operation successfully concluded with the safe rescue of Amidu, who was reportedly unharmed.
Following the incident, police confirmed that two individuals were arrested in connection with the kidnapping and remain in custody for further investigation.
This incident has prompted mixed responses from the public, with some Ugandans raising concerns about how abductions and kidnappings, particularly in unmarked vehicles, might affect public perceptions of safety. Social media users noted that such incidents could create confusion, as people may mistake genuine kidnappings for law enforcement activities, potentially limiting community intervention.
