LIRA, UGANDA – Police in Lira District under the North Kyoga Region are investigating a murder that occurred on 26th February 2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Alit Village, Adola Parish, Awiodyek Sub-county. The incident was officially reported to authorities on 26th February 2026, at 9:47 p.m.
The deceased, identified as Atoo Evaline, aged 39, a peasant farmer and resident of Alit Village, Apingmo Parish, Awiodyek Sub-county, reportedly died following a domestic dispute with her husband, now the prime suspect, Olungu Bonny.
According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, Public Relations Officer for the North Kyoga Region, preliminary investigations reveal that the incident began earlier in the evening when the deceased handed her newly acquired mobile phone, purchased on loan, to her son, Okori Gilbert, and his friend, Anyap Solomon, to download data and songs. After completing the task, the phone was reportedly handed to her husband.
When Atoo requested the phone later after fetching water, Olungu allegedly refused to return it. Her son contacted Anyap Solomon to help retrieve the device. Upon arrival, Olungu reportedly accessed the phone and discovered photographs of two men, which the deceased explained were her son and his friend. The suspect allegedly smashed the phone on the ground, and when the victim tried to pick it up, he allegedly seized it and stabbed her below the left rib cage.
The victim fell and began bleeding profusely. When her son attempted to intervene, the suspect reportedly became violent toward him as well. Bystanders managed to separate them and rushed the victim to Emmanuel Medical Clinic, Corner Amach, where she was pronounced dead on arrival before receiving medical attention. The suspect reportedly fled immediately and remains at large.
Police registered a murder case at Awiodyek Sub-county Police Station, later escalated to Lira Rural District for comprehensive investigation. Officers from the area, alongside the homicide team and Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO), visited and documented the scene. Statements have been recorded from witnesses, and the suspected murder weapon “a knife” was recovered and exhibited. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
Authorities say intelligence-led efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the suspect. Investigations are continuing, and further updates will be released in due course.
“The Police strongly condemn all forms of domestic violence and urge the public to resolve disputes amicably and seek lawful intervention,” SP Okema said. “We advise the suspect to report himself to any police station to undergo statement recording and other legal processes.”
