Uganda is set to host the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) from January 3 to 6 in Kampala, with President Museveni officially opening the event. Parliament Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa are confident about Uganda’s readiness, having actively participated in preparations, welcoming counterparts and diplomats at Entebbe Airport.

The conference kicks off with a standing committee session on January 4, including an address by President Museveni. As of Tuesday, speakers from nine countries, including Tonga, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Samoa, had arrived in Uganda for the event.

The key discussion areas, agreed upon by the Standing Committee chaired by Speaker Among, cover environment, climate change, and parliament’s role; security measures for parliamentarians and parliaments; health and well-being support in parliaments; and the role of speakers and presiding officers.

About CSPOC: Established in 1969 under the initiative of Canada’s Speaker Lucien Lamoureux, CSPOC brings together speakers and presiding officers from Commonwealth nations. Overseen by the Standing Committee, currently chaired by Speaker Among, it comprises representatives from various Commonwealth sub-regions. The committee proposes conference details, including dates, venue, and procedures, and prepares the agenda for discussion.
