Bukuka, Bugisu Region – The Bukuka Cultural Institution has issued a grave warning regarding the alarming rise in reckless murders and criminal behavior in the Bugisu region, expressing deep concern over recent violent incidents that have shocked the community.

According to Steven Masiga, Spokesperson for the Institution, two recent tragic cases have sparked public outrage. In one incident, popular entertainer DJ Gavin was stabbed to death by his girlfriend under unclear circumstances. In another, a woman was brutally stoned to death while trying to protect her husband from an attack by unidentified assailants.

“As a cultural institution, we are again disturbed by these reckless murders being boldly undertaken by people living in Bugisu without justifiable reason,” said Masiga.

The Institution has strongly condemned such acts of violence, urging community members to resist reacting emotionally to conflict situations. Quoting the legal principle of lex talionis  “an eye for an eye” Masiga warned that unchecked retaliation would only lead to more suffering.

“Lex talionis will leave the world a blind place. We appeal to our people to act with reason and avoid taking the law into their own hands.”

The statement also served as a reminder of the severe legal consequences for those who commit such crimes. Under Article 22 of the Ugandan Constitution, murder is criminalized, and those found guilty can face life imprisonment. The Penal Code further emphasizes that ignorance of the law is not a defense, as outlined in Section 6.

“Let it be known: once found culpable for murder, you will rot in prison for all your life,” Masiga warned.

The Institution also addressed the growing concern of drug abuse among youth in the region. Masiga noted that drug use is not only fueling violent behavior but is also destroying the future of many young people.

“We challenge the youth, whom I am told are now full-time on drugs, to shift from that habit. We are going to actively engage them and help them turn their lives around.”

Despite the grim developments, there are signs of hope. Masiga reported that following outreach tours in schools, some students have begun to vow to renounce drug use, thanks to the efforts of the Bukuka Institution and its partners.

“Let us collectively stand up and defend our community  against drug use, against murders, and against crime.”

In his closing remarks, Masiga reaffirmed the Institution’s commitment to moral guidance, lawfulness, and community mobilization.

“The sentence for murder is murder. Take note. Ignorance of the law affords no one an excuse or defense.”

The Bukuka Cultural Institution is calling on all stakeholders,  from local leaders to parents, teachers, and religious institutions,  to join hands in restoring peace, discipline, and cultural integrity in Bugisu.
