The Legends Of Theatre Association launched the New Year with the debut performance of ‘Gaasasika Ku Lwa,’ a play written by theatre legend Christopher Mukiibi, at the National Theatre on Sunday, December 31, 2023.
Commencing precisely at 7:00 pm with a modest initial turnout, the audience grew steadily as the play unfolded.
The storyline revolves around a family consistently mistreating and abusing their housemaids and workers. The plot takes a transformative turn when one of the workers, subjected to severe mistreatment, decides to retaliate, altering the entire narrative.
Kiyimba Musisi, the group’s public relations officer, explained that the theme was chosen to address the prevalent issue of worker mistreatment, expressing concern about the perceived indifference of the public.
Musisi highlighted the group’s commitment to reviving educational plays reminiscent of those from the 1980s, emphasizing the deviation of contemporary theatre from its fundamental role in shaping society.
Assessing the changes in theatre, Musisi noted the decline of educational plays that once played a crucial role in shaping society, stressing the imperative need to reintroduce them to the stage.
Encouraging Ugandans to embrace theatre, Musisi underscored its significance in rebuilding the country’s lost heritage.
Musisi pledged that in 2024, the group would feature many other plays from the 1980s and 1990s.
The cast of ‘Gaasasika Ku Lwa’ includes renowned actors such as Christopher Mukiibi, Dickson Zizinga, Benon Ssebunya, Ibrahim Ssematimba, Swaib Serugooti, Fatuma Nakiwala, Zaali’embikke, Kiyimba Musis, Wahida Nakanwagi, and Kiyimba Kasagga.
Additional performances of the play are scheduled for January 1, 6, 7, 13, and 14, 2024, at the National Theatre.
