Friday, October 13, 2023

The Nabagereka of Buganda, Sylvia Nagginda, has called for media outlets to use their platforms to promote and preserve cultural heritage. Speaking through Judy Kamanyi, a member of the Nabagereka Foundation, Nagginda emphasized that various forms of media, including online platforms, have often perpetuated stereotypes and misconceptions, failing to accurately represent culture.

Addressing attendees at the Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication’s Annual Media Convention, held under the theme “Bringing Culture Back in Media, Communication, and Youth Engagement in the Digital Age,” Kamanyi stressed the media’s responsibility to portray culture accurately and respectfully.

Nagginda also encouraged young people to leverage social media to showcase their respective cultures to a global audience. She noted that the internet has significantly altered people’s lives and influenced their lifestyles, potentially endangering cultural traditions. By using these platforms to invite the world to appreciate local culture, young people can positively impact how culture is perceived in Uganda.

Furthermore, Nagginda urged the Department of Journalism and Communication to equip its students with the necessary knowledge and professional guidance for effective internet use. She also called on the university management to make culture more visible on campus to empower cultural associations.

Professor Elizabeth Lubinga, the Head of the Department of Strategic Communication at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, commended the university for organizing the convention. She emphasized the importance of promoting culture and encouraging youth to embrace constructive cultural behavior in their pursuit of progress.

Dr. Aisha Nakiwala Ssembatya, the Head of the Department of Journalism and Communication, highlighted the pivotal role of youth in driving innovation, active participation, and leadership in shaping Uganda’s future. She also noted that the convention serves as a platform for discussing emerging issues in media, journalism, communication, and society, both in Uganda and beyond.

Renowned actor Abbey Mukiibi, one of the panelists, pointed out how the ongoing digital evolution has influenced various aspects of the media and the arts industry.

Rumor has it that Jjunju was born with a pencil in his hand and a headline in his heart. From an early age, he displayed a peculiar fascination with headlines, often turning everyday events into front-page sensations. His first words? Not "mama" or "dada," but "breaking news."
