Students at St. Janan Luwum Secondary School in Luweero District were urged to reflect on the virtues of humility exemplified by the late Archbishop of Uganda, Janani Luwum. The call was made during a commemoration event held on February 16, 2024, marking the Janani Luwum Day.

Rev. Can John Awodi, the Kampala Diocesan Secretary (COU), delivered a poignant message, urging both students and society at large to combat corruption, moral decay, and injustice. Drawing inspiration from Archbishop Luwum’s courageous stance against injustice, Rev. Awodi emphasized the importance of actively contributing to the betterment of society.

“In a country where moral decay and corruption are rampant, it is imperative for us as Christians and students to reflect on our role in fostering a more just and compassionate society,” remarked Rev. Awodi. He stressed the need for tangible action to address societal challenges, echoing Archbishop Luwum’s commitment to speaking truth to power.

Rev. Awodi highlighted the pervasive nature of moral degeneration, which manifests in various forms such as drug abuse, disrespect for others, and corrupt practices. He called upon all members of society, including teachers, political leaders, parents, and religious leaders, to lead by example and champion values of peace, love, and development.

Mr. Mike Kironde, the Director of the Janani schools, underscored the significance of commemorating Janani Luwum Day, citing the Archbishop’s enduring legacy of integrity and service. The Janani schools, named in honor of Archbishop Luwum, continue to uphold his values and teachings as part of their educational ethos.

Born in Muchwini Village, Kitgum District, in 1922, Archbishop Janani Luwum served as the Anglican Archbishop for Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Boga-Zaire. His tragic martyrdom on February 16, 1977, during the regime of President Idi Amin, remains a symbol of unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

Uganda observes February 16 annually as Janani Luwum Day, a public holiday dedicated to honoring the Archbishop’s legacy and the values for which he stood.
