Former Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde, has passed away. The announcement came on Monday evening, October 14, 2024. He died at Kisubi Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment, according to a statement from the Namirembe Diocese Fathers Union.

The Diocese confirmed his passing through their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “On a sad note, we announce the terrible news of the sudden death of Bishop Emeritus, the Rt. Rev. Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde, the 4th Bishop of our Diocese. May his soul rest in peace.”

Bishop Ssekadde retired in 2009 after 16 years of leading Namirembe Diocese, the oldest diocese in the Anglican Church of Uganda. He was succeeded by Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira. His passing marks the end of a long and impactful career in the church, where he served for more than 50 years.

During his time as bishop, Ssekadde was known for encouraging clergymen to engage in self-help projects to improve their livelihoods. His leadership emphasized not only spiritual guidance but also the importance of economic independence for reverends, ensuring they had additional sources of income.
